This gallery is an eclectic mix of imagery including masks from my urban carnival series, public art, festivals and an array of indulgences into the imaginative.
I am interested in the visual communication of masks and I use them in my paintings of carnival characters exploring themes such as theatre, circus and comedy. I’ve used basal masks to devise three distinct and symbolic emotional archetypes: the poet: sensitive, thoughtful and brooding; the joker: athletic, clever and deceitful and the sloth: lovable, lazy and excessive. In these paintings the characters combine physically to express comical scenarios of universal themes and consideration of the interrelationship between performance, perception and reality. For me the mask itself is a reminder of the restrictions of individual viewpoint.
